Jets to Be Upgraded

MOSCOW -- More than 100 Soviet fighter planes throughout Eastern Europe will be upgraded to meet NATO standards with the help of Russia and Germany, Interfax reported.

The modernization program, to be financed by Germany, was a cheaper option than purchasing new, Western-made planes, Interfax quoted Vladimir Kuzmin, head of the Russian MAPO company, as saying Wednesday.

The project is to be carried out by a joint Russian-German venture, consisting of Germany's Dasa, the Russian arms exporting company Rosvooruzheniye and Russian enterprises involved in manufacturing MiG jets.
