Far East Forest Fires

MOSCOW -- Fires are blazing out of control across up to 40,000 hectares of Siberian woodland, while snowfall has slowed the spread of forest fires on Sakhalin Island in the Far East, Itar-Tass news reported Monday.

A funding shortage that has severely hampered firefighters is to blame for the unprecedented scale of forest fires this year, Itar-Tass said. Fire-spotting planes and helicopters had been unable to fly for lack of fuel.

In all, about 547,000 hectares are on fire in the far eastern Khabarovsk region. On nearby Sakhalin Island, however, forest fires have calmed due to an early snow. Itar-Tass said the fires no longer threaten inhabited areas.
