Dagestani Sit-In

MAKHACHKALA, Dagestan -- About 500 supporters of an opposition leader in the troubled southern republic of Dagestan set up camp Thursday on the outskirts of the regional capital of Makhachkala and said they would not leave until their demands were fulfilled.

The protesters marched about 100 kilometers from the Novolaksky district to the capital to demand the release of Magomed Khachilayev, who was arrested earlier this month on charges of organizing a May 21 raid on the government building in Makhachkala with his brother, Nadir Khachilayev.

Nadir Khachilayev heads Russia's Moslem Union, a leading organization of Moslems. Magomed Khachilayev is the leader of a movement representing the Lak ethnic group in Dagestan. Both brothers have been leading opponents of the regional government.
