Dagestan Crackdown

MOSCOW -- More than 15 people in the Russian republic of Dagestan have been arrested on accusations ranging from abuse of office to terrorism, Itar-Tass reported.

The arrests were made Wednesday by an investigation team from the Interior Ministry, First Deputy Minister Vladimir Kolesnikov said on television.

The sweeping crackdown comes on the same day that a group of Dagestani law enforcement officers declared a "war on criminals" in the violence-torn republic, Itar-Tass said.

"We have decided to disarm the criminal groups which are preventing our people from leading normal lives," Dagestani Interior Minister Adilgerei Magomedtagirov said.
