Air Canada Pilots Strike

TORONTO -- Air Canada has given layoff notices to 60 percent of its employees as the reality of the airline's first legal pilots' strike in its 61-year history set in.

"The notices are going out this afternoon [to 14,000 employees and take effect in 72 hours], so Saturday they would be on layoff," an airline official said Wednesday.

The strike went ahead after lengthy negotiations over new pilots' contracts failed to achieve agreement over pay, working conditions and pensions.

In Minneapolis, a pilots strike forced Northwest Airlines on Wednesday to lay off more than half its work force -- 27,500 employees -- and canceled all flights through Monday.
