U.S. Inspects at Mayak

MOSCOW -- A U.S. Defense Department team completed an inspection Thursday of a U.S.-funded storage facility for nuclear weapons materials in the Chelyabinsk region, Interfax reported.

The facility, located at the Mayak nuclear plant where much of Russia's nuclear waste is processed and stored, is being funded on a parity basis by the Defense Department. The United States has so far supplied 20 percent of its $150 million share of the costs. Russia has provided only labor and scientific support, Interfax reported.

Mayak Deputy General Director Vladimir Matveyenko said plant directors also discussed further financing for the facility with the Americans.

Defense Department representatives will visit Mayak again in the fall.
