TB Rates in Prison

MOSCOW -- Tuberculosis has killed 20,000 prison inmates in Russia over the past two years, Interfax quoted the Prosecutor General's Office as saying Thursday.

A tenth of the prison population is infected with the disease, including a new drug-resistant strain, Yury Shcherbanenko, a senior official from the prosecutor's office, said at a news conference.

Sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis, typhoid and dystrophy are the leading causes of death in Russia's prison system, where violations of prisoners' right to health care threaten Russia's ability to meet its Council of Europe obligations, Shcherbanenko said.
