Taliban Border Alert

MOSCOW -- Russian troops who patrol Tajikistan's border with Afghanistan have taken measures to prevent Taliban forces from crossing in case they overrun northern-based opposition forces, the border guard chief said Thursday.

"Appropriate instructions have already been given to forestall an advance by Taliban fighters,'' Border Service chief Nikolai Bordyuzha said, according to Interfax.

The measures would also prevent an influx of refugees chased out by the Taliban, he said.

About 25,000 Russian troops are stationed in Tajikistan to support the government and guard the Afghan border from smugglers and fighters.
