Scania Eyes Russia

MOSCOW -- Swedish truck and bus manufacturer Scania is considering opening an assembly line in Russia, company President Leif Ostling said at a news conference in Moscow.

A feasibility study for the project, which would be located in Western Russia, is under way, he said Wednesday. Company representatives have already met with regional officials to discuss the proposal.

Scania produced 15 percent of the 4,000 trucks that Russia, Ukraine and Belarus imported last year, Ostling said.

The company hopes to increase sales to 25 percent by the year 2000.
