Fires in Far East

MOSCOW -- Large fires raged Friday in the forests of the Russian Far East, and cash-strapped regional authorities fretted about the cost of fighting them, Itar-Tass reported.

Fires in the Khabarovsk region covered 243,000 hectares, and were costing up to 900,000 rubles ($129,000) in fire-fighting expenses each day, the regional office of the Emergency Situations Ministry said.

Another 35,000 hectares were burning in surrounding regions of the Far East, Itar-Tass said.
