East Siberia Flooding

MOSCOW -- Two swollen rivers in the southeastern region of Chita have flooded 32 settlements and left more than 6,000 people homeless, a news report said Tuesday.

Emergency workers, including police and army troops, were evacuating residents from settlements along the Shilka and Nercha rivers, Itar-Tass reported.

Local officials declared a state of emergency in the region. No deaths have been linked to the flooding.

Weather forecasters said high water levels may persist until the weekend, when a hurricane that swept in from Mongolia was likely to dissipate, Itar-Tass reported.
