Check Scam in Jersey

RARITAN, New Jersey -- Three Russians were arrested and charged with writing bad checks to buy thousands of dollars of merchandise, including men's, women's and children's clothing, cordless phones, and toiletries, authorities said.

Federal and local law officers arrested the trio Wednesday, a week before the men were to return to Russia, based on airline tickets found in their motel room, Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne Forrest said Thursday.

Officers seized the goods, bought at nearby malls, and $2,100.

The scam was exposed Wednesday when a teller at a local bank became suspicious of a check that one of the Russians was trying to cash, Forrest said.
