Chechen-Taliban Ties

MOSCOW -- The government of Chechnya, whose independence is not officially recognized by any country, says it is establishing diplomatic relations with the Taliban militia in Afghanistan, Interfax reported.

The Taliban militia has been recognized by countries as the legitimate rulers of Afghanistan.

Interfax reported that Chechen Foreign Minister Movladi Udugov said his ministry recently sent proposals for establishing diplomatic relations to 20 countries as well as the United Nations. He said the Taliban responded before any other recipient of the proposal.

Udugov called on Russia to follow Chechnya's lead and recognize the Taliban. Russia still considers Chechnya its internal republic
