Balkan NATO Exercises

BRUSSELS -- Forces from 14 countries, including Russia, will take part in NATO military exercises in Albania from Aug. 17 to 22, the alliance's Military Committee said Thursday.

The countries, members of NATO or linked to the alliance via its Partnership for Peace program, are Albania, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Russia, Spain, Turkey, Britain and the United States.

It said forces from six other countries would act as observers in the exercises, called Cooperative Assembly.

The Albanian exercises were agreed to in principle by foreign ministers from the 16-nation trans-Atlantic alliance in May and are being held largely to step up NATO's visibility in the region bordering Serbia's troubled Kosovo province.
