Afghans Flee Fighting to Tajik Border

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan -- Refugees fleeing fighting in northern Afghanistan could be seen congregating along the border with the former Soviet republic of Tajikistan, Russian troops posted there said Thursday.

Russia reinforced the border and aimed new, strongly worded allegations at Pakistan for its support of Afghanistan's Taliban militia. Pakistani officials immediately denied these charges.

"In the last few days Russian border guards have seen refugees massing on Afghan territory close to the border," a Russian border guard spokesman said in Tajikistan.

Some on the Tajik side of the border have fled for the relative safety of the capital, Dushanbe, he said.
