Yeltsin Backs Swiss Monument Facelift

President Boris Yeltsin has said Russia should help restore a monument in Switzerland commemorating a military march across the Alps under Commander Alexander Suvorov at the end of the 18th century.

Yeltsin has instructed Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov and Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev to prepare the groundwork necessary for Russia to participate in the restoration, the president's press service said Wednesday.

"The outstanding moments of Russia's military glory should be remembered," Yeltsin said.

The 200th anniversary of the legendary march is approaching, Yeltsin said. It should contribute to the development of Russian-Swiss relations and reinforce the patriotic spirit of Russia's young people, he said.

Suvorov is remembered for his brave decision to march his army across the snow-covered Alps in 1799 in order to break through an enemy blockade. He escaped with three-quarters of his force intact.
