WHAT IS TO BE DONE?

Like a Virgin

"The Baby of Macon," a 1993 Peter Greenaway drama about a baby born from a purported virgin shows Thursday at the Cinema Center. The film, which stars Julia Ormond, Ralph Fiennes and Philip Stone, screens with Russian voice-over at 9 p.m. in the Small Hall, 15 Druzhinnikovskaya Ulitsa. Tickets cost 25 rubles ($4.25). Tel. 205-7306. Nearest metro: Krasnopresnenskaya.

Bashmet's Bow

Acclaimed Russian violist Yury Bashmet sits in Thursday as guest soloist with the American-Russian Youth Orchestra as part of the World Youth Music Forum. The orchestra is scheduled to perform Copland's Music for Theater, Stravinsky's Suite No. 2 for Small Orchestra, Bruch's "Kol Nidrei" for Viola and Orchestra and Joplin's Ragtimes. The concert starts at 7 p.m. at the Conservatory Great Hall, 13 Bolshaya Nikitskaya Ulitsa. Tickets cost 5 to 15 rubles (75 cents to $2.50). Tel. 229-0225. Nearest metro: Arbatskaya.

Odd Couple

The talented musical duo of Sergei Ryzhenko, a violist, poet and composer -- formerly of Aquarium, and DDT -- and Andrei Bliznyuk, a pianist who just happens to look a lot like a young Shostakovich, perform their last concert before heading off to Sevastopol to work on a new CD. It all begins at 10 p.m. Thursday at the Gvozdi Club, 19 Bolshaya Nikitskaya Ulitsa. Admission is 60 rubles ($10). Tel. 290-2254. Nearest metro: Pushkinskaya.
