Weapons Exports Surge

MOSCOW -- Weapons account for 80 percent of Russia's industrial exports, and are expected to reach $3.5 billion this year, the head of the state-run arms exporter said.

"Weapons today are the most high-tech product exported by Russia,'' Rosvooruzheniye chief Yevgeny Ananyev wrote in a newspaper article Wednesday.

Russia plans to deliver weapons to 59 countries this year, Ananyev said. The $3.5 billion they will bring in is an increase of $1 billion over 1997, he said.

Rosvooruzheniye has also signed contracts worth more than $8 billion for arms sales through 2005, he said.
