Turkmen Gas Output

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan -- Turkmenistan's gas output almost halved in the first six months of 1998 owing to a long-standing debate with Moscow over gas prices, according to a report on the state of the economy.

But despite the 41 percent drop in output, the economy still grew 3 percent year-on-year in the first half of the year, the Turkmen Institute of Statistics and Prognosis reported Friday.

The delivery of gas to the CIS states was suspended after the resource-rich Central Asian country failed to agree with Russia's Gazprom on the price and method of gas shipments.
