Tsarist Wreck Lifted

RAUMA, Finland -- Treasure hunters made a breakthrough in their attempt to raise a World War I wreck laden with Heidsieck champagne when their floating crane pulled it off the Baltic Sea floor Friday.

The salvagers lifted the wreck 34 meters above the seabed and had 30 meters to go to bring the ship close to the surface where the cargo could be unloaded.

The wooden ketch Jonk?ping was ferrying 5,000 bottles of 1907 Heidsieck & Co. champagne and several dozen casks of cognac and wine from Sweden to the Russian army garrisoned in Finland when it was sunk by a German submarine in 1916.
