Spartak Plays Zenit to Draw, Kanchelskis Goes to Rangers

Champion Spartak Moscow kept a narrow one-point lead at the top of the Russian premier division after grinding out a scoreless draw with second-place Zenit St. Petersburg in Moscow.

The Muscovites failed to score, spurning several chances, and had Andrei Tikhonov hit the bar minutes before halftime at Dynamo Stadium on Wednesday. Spartak now has 32 points to Zenit's 31.

In other action, Lokomotiv Moscow won 2-0 at bottom-of-the-league Tyumen to move into third with 26 points.

Rotor Volgograd leapfrogged visitors Rostselmash Rostov into fourth place by thrashing them 5-1 at home.

The win puts Rotor level with Lokomotiv at 26 points. The league's top scorer, Oleg Veretennikov, raised his tally to 13 goals with a double strike for Rotor.

Russian winger Andrei Kanchelskis returned to British soccer Wednesday when he signed with the Glasgow Rangers for a record Scottish transfer fee of pounds 5.5 million ($8.8 million).

Kanchelskis, 29, who spent two seasons in Italy with Fiorentina after playing for Manchester United and Everton in the English premier league, signed a four-year contract with the Scottish giants.

Kanchelskis will fill the void left by the departures of Paul Gascoigne and Brian Laudrup.

"It was vital that we got him here because we were missing a player who can play on the right side,'' Rangers' manager Dick Advocaat said. "Like the other new players, he is of the highest quality. He is fast, skillful and he is very experienced. Hopefully he will live up to our expectations.''

The Ukrainian-born Kanchelskis was part of the Manchester United side that won the league title in 1993 and the league-FA Cup double in 1994. He played for Everton in 1995 and 1996 before joining Fiorentina.
