Russia, Syria Mull Pact

MOSCOW -- Russia and Syria will soon sign agreements to cooperate on the peaceful use of atomic energy, Itar-Tass reported Monday.

Russia will help build a nuclear research center in Syria, which will be provided with a light-water 25 megawatt reactor, the news agency reported.

Russia also plans to train Syrian specialists in a two-year program at the Moscow Physical Engineering Institute, the report said. Syria may also purchase radioactive material from Russia for industrial and medical use.

The pacts were drawn up when delegates of Syria's Atomic Energy Commission visited Moscow last week.
