Rain Ruins Fishing

MOSCOW -- Foul weather Wednesday forced President Boris Yeltsin to abandon a trout fishing expedition at hiscountry retreat in Karelia, northwestern Russia, Interfax said.

Instead the head of state stayed indoors at his residence at Chuyiskaya Chupa "working on documents," the regional governor was quoted as saying, using the customary formula to describe what Yeltsin does on vacation.

But the 67-year-old president was "in good form and working actively for several hours a day," Governor Sergei Katanandov said.

Yeltsin and his wife, Naina, arrived Saturday and were scheduled to stay until Aug. 4.
