Police Manhunt Nabs Army Deserter

Police captured an army deserter in Russia's far northwest, completing a manhunt for four soldiers who fled from a prison stockade, a military prosecutor said Tuesday.

Two of the other deserters were shot dead and one was captured on Monday.

The four men were under guard in a prison stockade in the town of Pechenga, 1,600 kilometers north of Moscow near Russia's border with Norway.

One managed to disarm his guard wound him, and free the other three deserters.

The men fled with stolen AK-47s and pistols, but by Monday morning a search party had tracked them down. When the deserters refused to give up their weapons, two were killed in a shootout and the army search party arrested a third.

The fourth man was captured at midnight Monday, Itar-Tass quoted the district's military prosecutor, Colonel Anatoly Novozhilov, as saying.
