Pilot Killed in Krasnoyarsk Helicopter Crash

A pilot was killed in a helicopter crash in Siberia's Krasnoyarsk region Monday in the fourth fatal accident involving Russian-made Mi-8s in recent weeks.

The crash, which happened as the helicopter tried to land after training exercises, took place in front of Russian Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu and Krasnoyarsk Governor Alexander Lebed, a ministry spokeswoman said.

"Of course Governor Lebed and the minister were shocked because the accident happened in front of their eyes," she said.

Two men aboard the helicopter were injured.

Television footage showed the helicopter spinning out of control as its blades scythed the tops of nearby trees.

The spokeswoman said it was not immediately clear what caused the accident, adding the pilot was very experienced.

But Rudolf Teymurazov, head of a commission that investigates air crashes in the former Soviet Union, said a lack of experience was one of the main reasons for such accidents.

"Mi-8 pilots do not spend enough time on training flights," he said. He was not referring to Monday's accident.

Teymurazov said the Mi-8 generally operated well in normal daytime conditions but added that crashes usually occurred either at nighttime or in poor weather.
