National Census Plan

MOSCOW -- The Cabinet on Thursday approved a draft law setting a census for next year, the first in Russia since before the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, news agencies reported.

The census, to take place Nov. 10-17 1999, will cost 1.3 billion rubles ($210 million), 80 percent of which will come from the federal budget and 20 percent from regional budgets.

Information collected on citizens will include full name, address, relatives, gender, age, marital status, ethnicity, first language, education and living means.
