Lighting the North

MOSCOW -- Russia will use a giant mirror in space in a new bid to bring extra light to its frozen north, a Russian Space Agency spokesman said Wednesday.

Scientists will attempt to reflect the sun's rays to Earth in November using a giant aluminized screen attached to a Russian spacecraft.

Scientists hailed a first experiment in February 1993 a success after a 20-meter beam of light was seen in parts of Europe -- but not in Siberia where it was blocked by cloud cover. The new experiment will use a bigger screen and will be conducted over a longer period of time.
