Karate Bout Injures

KIEV -- A Russian contestant in a contact karate contest remained in critical condition Tuesday after being injured in a bout, doctors said.

Said Isayev of the Russian republic of Dagestan was hospitalized with serious brain injuries and remained unconscious Tuesday after surgery.

Although Isayev was wearing a protective helmet, he suffered a heavy blow in the jaw, which resulted in massive brain hemorrhage, said Ihor Konivets, a doctor at Kiev's First Aid Hospital.

The accident happened Saturday during the first youth contact karate world championship, which was organized by the Ukrainian Federation of Martial Arts.
