Jiang to Attend Summit

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- Chinese President Jiang Zemin will attend a five-country summit in Kazakhstan on Friday even though his Russian counterpart, Boris Yeltsin, will not attend the meeting, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

Jiang, Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov, who will attend in President Yeltsin's place, and the presidents of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are expected to sign a treaty to demarcate the 8,000-kilometer border between the former Soviet states and China, a ministry spokeswoman said.

Jiang also will meet privately with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev on Saturday. The Chinese president also will hold bilateral meetings with Primakov and the presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
