Georgia Peacekeepers

TBILISI, Georgia -- The mandate for Russian peacekeepers in Georgia runs out this month, but the government said it had not yet decided whether it wants to keep the troops to monitor the breakaway region of Abkhazia.

Georgia has accused the Russian peacekeepers of being too sympathetic to the separatists in Abkhazia during fighting in May between the separatists and militia groups that support Georgian central government.

Georgia's Security Council is expected to review the May clashes at a July 30 meeting, and afterward a decision will be made about whether the peacekeepers should stay or leave, said Georgian Foreign Minister Irakly Menagarishvili.
