Chechen Premier's Resigning Accepted

The president of Chechnya accepted Wednesday the resignation of the rebel republic's acting prime minister, Interfax reported.

President Aslan Maskhadov also holds the title of prime minister, but for the last six months he had turned over the responsibilities of the office to former guerrilla leader Shamil Basayev.

Basayev submitted a letter of resignation last week, saying he had only agreed to serve for six months.

Maskhadov has accepted the resignation and begun to consider other candidates for the post, his spokesman, Mairbek Vachigayev, was quoted as saying by Interfax.

Basayev is a controversial figure, reviled in Russia as the leader of a hostage-taking raid that left more than 100 people dead during the 1994-96 Chechen war.
