Abkhaz Border Patrols

TBILISI, Georgia -- Georgia's breakaway province of Abkhazia has sent naval boats to patrol its Black Sea coast in defiance of the government's plan to take over control of the shoreline.

Russia has been patrolling Georgia's coast since 1994, the same year Moscow deployed peacekeepers to separate Georgian government troops and Abkhaz separatist forces following a 13-month war.

Russia and Georgia agreed last month that Georgian border guards would take over coastal patrols starting July 16.

But Abkhazia has opposed the move, which would strengthen the Georgian government's control over the region.
