Solzhenitsyn's Book Sells Out

The print run of a new book by Alexander Solzhenitsyn will be doubled to 10,000, his publisher said Friday.

The decision was made after half of the first 5,000 copies of "Russia in the Abyss'' sold out in the first two days, Interfax quoted Viktor Moskvin as saying.

"Russia in the Abyss" is Solzhenitsyn's second book since the Nobel laureate returned from exile in 1994. The lukewarm reception it received from the literary world was another indication of how far his reputation in Russia has fallen since the collapse of communism.

The new book, like his last, "The Russian Question at the End of the 20th Century," is largely an indictment of post-Soviet Russia, which he sees as dominated by greed, corruption and cultural decline. He calls for a return to tradition.
