Kidnappings Pledge

LONDON -- Russian Interior Minister Sergei Stepashin said Thursday that his ministry was doing all it could to secure the release of two British aid workers kidnapped in Chechnya last July.

Stepashin was due to meet the families of the two Britons, Camilla Carr and Jon James, later Thursday.

The fate of the two hostages was the main topic at a meeting in London between Stepashin and British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, who expressed deep concern about their fate, the Foreign Office said.

It said Britain and Russia emphasized the importance of standing firm against ransom payments.
