Bomb Fails to Free Ice

MOSCOW -- A ice-jammed river burst has its banks flooding dozens of homes, barns, offices and a child care center in northern Russia, Itar-Tass said.

Earlier Thursday, fighter jets bombed the ice jam on the Pechora River in a futile effort to prevent flooding.

The ice had piled up 30 kilometers down river from the city of Naryan-Mar, capital of the Nenets region, Itar-Tass said.

On Wednesday, demolition experts broke up an ice jam 65 kilometers upstream. Water that had inundated the villages of Labozhskoye and Velikovisochnoye then receded, Itar-Tass said.
