Yeltsin Puts Last Touches On Cabinet

President Boris Yeltsin will fill the last remaining seats in his new streamlined Cabinet on Friday, Prime Minister Sergei Kiriyenko said Thursday.

One key Cabinet post that remains empty is industry and commerce minister. Media reports said it had been offered to Alexander Shokhin, leader of Our Home Is Russia, a pro-government faction in parliament. But Shokhin denied that he'd been offered the post, and said he wasn't interested.

Another vacant position is nationalities minister.

Kiriyenko said the new Cabinet members had been selected "with regard to their professionalism and competence,'' Russian news agencies said.

While the government had tried to take into account proposals from parliamentary factions, it sought a "professional rather than political approach,'' Kiriyenko said.

Yeltsin fired Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin's government in March.
