Shevtsov Gets Post

MOSCOW -- The sacked commander of Russia's powerful Interior Ministry troops has been appointed deputy interior minister for the North Caucasus, Interior Minister Sergei Stepashin said Tuesday, Interfax reported.

President Boris Yeltsin issued a decree firing Leonty Shevtsov earlier this month during a Cabinet reshuffle.

Shevtsov served as chief of staff of the federal forces in Chechnya before leading a Russian contingent cooperating with United Nations peacekeeping forces in Bosnia.

The Interior Ministry said Yeltsin was expected to approve the appointment.
