Progress Lifts Off

MOSCOW -- A cargo ship carrying 1.5 metric tons of supplies for the Mir space station lifted off successfully Friday from the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan.

The unmanned Progress M-39 cargo ship blasted off at 2:13 a.m. Friday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. It's scheduled to dock with Mir at 3:50 a.m. Sunday, said Vera Medvedkova, a spokeswoman for mission control.

The spacecraft will deliver the usual cargo of fuel, water and other supplies along with mail from relatives of cosmonauts Talgat Musabayev and Nikolai Budarin and NASA astronaut Andrew Thomas.

The Russian crew had a special request this time -- fresh lemons, Itar-Tass reported.
