Minsk Front Marches

MINSK, Belarus -- About 2,000 young Belarusians marched through the center of Minsk this week to protest what they termed President Alexander Lukashenko's anti-national policies and to show support for their imprisoned comrades.

The Belarussian Popular Front organized the demonstration Thursday to protest the May 14, 1995, referendum that did away with Belarus' national flag, adopted Russian as the country's second state language and endorsed closer integration with Russia.

The front also wanted to demonstrate solidarity with two of its members who have been jailed over the past few months for their political activism.
