Left Party Backs Zubov

MOSCOW -- Russia's Communist Party called on voters in the Siberian region of Krasnoyarsk on Tuesday to back incumbent Governor Valery Zubov against a strong challenge from former General Alexander Lebed, Interfax reported.

The Communists warned the electorate ahead of Sunday's runoff vote that a vote for the presidential hopeful Lebed would bring about a "rise to power of mafia groups who are gambling on Lebed," Interfax said.

Zubov promised last week to find room in a future team for opposition parties, which include the Communists, if he is re-elected.

In the first round vote, Lebed performed better than expected by leading with 45.1 percent of the vote. Zubov scored 35.4 percent.
