Finn Disputes Russian Cannes Entry

CANNES, France -- The director and producers of the Russian entry in competition at the Cannes Film Festival reacted angrily Friday to charges by a Finnish producer that they had purloined the screenplay without acknowledgement.

Lawyers for producer-director Pekka Lehto wrote to Cannes festival chief Gilles Jacob asking him to halt the screening of Alexei German's film "Khrustalyov, My Car!" until the question of copyright was resolved, media reported Thursday.

They said the film, due to be screened in the competition Thursday, was based on a script Lehto co-wrote with German and faxed Jacob, the Russian production company Lenfilm and French co-producer Guy Seligmann and demanded that all public screenings be called off.

German, Seligmann and writer Svetlana Karmalita have written to Lehto's KinoFinlandia company insisting that the story of "Khrustalyov, My Car!" was "entirely based on Alexei German's autobiographical context."
