Blast Kills 5 Miners

KIEV -- A methane gas explosion in a Ukrainian coal mine killed at least five workers and wounded four more, officials said Tuesday.

The accident occurred Monday during a blasting operation at the Petrovskaya coal mine in the Donetsk mining region. Rescue workers were still searching Tuesday for one missing miner, Interfax reported, quoting Ukraine's Emergency Situations Ministry.

Last year, two workers were killed and two others were badly injured in three accidents at the same mine. The total of 767 Ukrainian miners have been killed in mining accidents since the beginning of 1996, the Independent Miners Union said.
