Belarus to Ease Controls

KIEV -- Belarus' central bank chairman said the former Soviet republic planned to free up exchange controls and liberalize prices this year.

Pyotr Prokopovich also told investors Monday at the annual meeting of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development that his main task was to maintain economic growth.

"We plan to liberalize prices and exchange by the end of the year," Prokopovich said. "The most complicated task for the bank is to liberalize the exchange rate policy."
