A Holy Conversation Piece

There's nothing like taking a religious icon from another culture and turning it into something to be admired on a coffee table.

A few years ago, crucifixes were getting all the attention. Today's fixation could become the Om Mani stone, a palm-sized rock traditionally found in almost every home of a Tibetan Buddhist as well as along roadsides and in shrines.

You can recognize the Om Mani stone by the sacred message carved on its face -- "Om mani peme hung." That's the chant that Buddhists recite repeatedly to bring good luck and spiritual well being.

Material Culture, a shop in Bethesda, Maryland, whose own mantra is the home is a reflection of the soul, has begun selling the stones for $12 each.
