Stalin Files Unlocked

MOSCOW -- President Boris Yeltsin on Wednesday signed a decree ordering the secret archives of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin to be made public, his spokesman Sergei Yastrzhembsky announced.

Yastrzhembsky said Yeltsin's decision was in response to a presidential commission's bid to publish a book on Stalin based on the secret archives.

"These archives contain documents little known by the public, documents on the political police, lists and letters of those convicted and outlines on how to conduct interrogations bearing Stalin's handwriting," the spokesman said.
