Spark Caused Mine Fire

KIEV -- A malfunctioning motor sets off sparks that ignited a coal mine explosion that killed 63 miners in eastern Ukraine last week, government investigators said Friday.

In an interview with Ukrainian state television, commission member Stanislav Tkachuk said workers had repaired the electric motor just one day before the catastrophe in the Skochinskoho mine near Donetsk.

"During the repair, workers did not carefully connect power cables to the motor and bad contacts caused the sparks," Tkachuk said.
