Pensions Delayed Again

MOSCOW -- Despite repeated pledges to pay pensions on time, the Russian government is again falling behind due to a shortage of funds, a top official said Wednesday.

Pension payments, which are supposed to be made at the beginning of each month, will be seven to 10 days late in April, Oleg Sysuyev, acting deputy prime minister, was quoted by Interfax as saying.

The Russian Pension Fund currently has only 71 percent of the money it should, Sysuyev added.

President Boris Yeltsin said pensions and salaries were up to date at the end of last year, but in many regions, workers and pensioners complain that their money still arrives months late.
