Moscow Boxing Champion Targeted in Hit

The Moscow city boxing champion, Sergei Mizeriya, was wounded and his trainer killed in the early hours of Friday morning when their car was hit by a hail of machinegun fire from a passing vehicle.

Mizeriya, 24, was critically injured and taken to a nearby hospital. His trainer, Andrei Kharitonov, 40, was killed outright in the attack, which took place on Varshavskoye Shosse in southern Moscow.

The two gunmen left the crime scene and are still at large, police and sports officials said.

"Andrei wanted to give his athlete a lift home after a late practice session Thursday, and when they were approaching Mizeriya's apartment building, another car came by and opened fire," Moscow's sports committee department head Sergei Kunin said Friday.

"I knew both men very well, but at this point its hard to say why someone wanted to kill them," he added.

The city police only said they are investigating the crime. A spokesman at the Anino sports club, which Kharitonov lead, said he was unable to comment.

"Everyone is busy getting ready for the funeral and can't give any more details," the spokesman said.

Kharitonov, who coached several top Russian boxers, including current world silver medalist Paat Gvasalia, is survived by his wife and two children.
