Latvia Examines Effect of Sanctions

RIGA, Latvia -- The Latvian government said Wednesday it has asked the Economy Ministry to examine how Russian sanctions, when imposed, would affect the state as newspapers reported some measures already seemed to have been implemented.

"Russia often repeats that it will bring sanctions against us, and the prime minister wanted to know what the effect would be," said a spokesman for Prime Minister Guntar Krasts.

The Kremlin threatened to impose economic sanctions after police in the Baltic state broke up a protest of mainly Russian-speakers in March that Moscow said amounted to police brutality.

Newspaper Bizness I Baltiya quoted Economy Ministry officials as saying sanctions could lead to a 50 percent to 70 percent fall in trade with Russia.
