Kazan, Metallurg Reach Semifinals

Russia's top two hockey teams, champion Ak Bars Kazan and Metallurg Magnitogorsk, have reached the semifinals of the Russian Cup after eliminating Spartak Moscow and Severstal Cherepovets, respectively.

After beating Spartak 3-1 in Moscow in Tuesday's opener, Kazan won the second game 5-1 back home Thursday, clinching the best-of-three quarterfinal series. In the semifinals, the Tatarstan team will take on the winner of the Dynamo Moscow-Lada Togliatti series. The two teams were deadlocked 1-1 after the first two contests. The deciding game was played Friday night.

In the other bracket, Metallurg, after edging Severstal on the road 3-2 Tuesday, won more easily at home 6-3 Thursday. Magnitogorsk faces the winner of the game between Torpedo Yaroslavl and Avangard Omsk, which was also played late Friday.

The semifinals start Monday, and the best-of-five finals opens April 19.

Russia's third and final place in hockey's Euroleague competition next season is also up for grabs.
